Carney to visit her hometown in Fort Smith, NWT, Wednesday

Prime Minister Mark Carney will visit his hometown of Fort Smith on Wednesday, NWT – his first official visit to the area after his choice.

According to the Prime Minister’s office, Carney and Prime Minister RJ Simpson will meet local families in Fort Smith on Wednesday morning to discuss reasonable prices and food safety.

Carney is also expected to meet there with local leaders on the effects of NWT forest fires

Although this fire season has so far been relatively calm, the fires in the area have suffered in recent years, including the evacuation of Fort Smith, Hay River and Yellowknife in 2023.

Carney was born in Fort Smith and lived in the southern NWT city until her family moved south when she was about six years old.

He will be in Inuvik on Wednesday evening, where he visits the local community center and meets Natan Obern, Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami President and Inuviajan Duane Smith, chairman of Regional Corporation.

He is expected to discuss the Bill C-5, the most important projects of the Federal Government.

In the summer, the Federal Government announced that it would hold “summons” with the first nations, Inuit and Métis to discuss the Canadian Building Act, which gives the government the authority to speed up projects and overcome certain laws, government regulations and environmental assessments if a national project is considered in the field.

Legislation has been controversial, and many of the first nation groups say that it is a violation of their contracts and the constitutional rights.
